Many places including Jersey have museums at the top of their list of activities for tourists and locals alike. Jersey is an island of rich heritage and history waiting to be discovered and explored; with ancient monuments, outstanding exhibitions and state-of-the-art galleries, Jersey’s museums and historical attractions tell a wonderful story. So, take a trip back in time and delve into some of Jersey’s best museums and historical settings.
Jersey War Tunnels
No other tourist attraction portrays the real tale of Jersey during World War II like Jersey War Tunnels. It provides the most accurate depiction of life in Jersey during World War II. The exhibition is located inside a network of tunnels that were constructed by the Germans with slave labour.
16 New Street Georgian House Museum
In this restored townhouse, you will be taken back in time to an era of elegance with real sights and sounds, when gentlemen smoked clay pipes, and the threat of French invasion was a constant topic of conversation.
Channel Islands Military Museum
The German bunker that now serves as the Channel Islands Military Museum was formerly a part of Hitler’s Atlantic Wall defences. Many rooms within the bunker itself are filled with military and civilian objects that help illustrate the tale of the prolonged five-year German captivity.
Hamptonne Country Life Museum
Explore the different houses which make up Hamptonne, find out more about Jersey’s history of cider making in the cider barn and wander through the cider apple orchard and meet the Hamptonne calves, chickens, sheep and piglets in the traditional farmstead and meadow.
Maritime Museum & Occupation Tapestry Gallery
The Maritime Museum is dedicated to maritime exploration, navigation, and the natural world. Occupation Tapestry Gallery, created by islanders to commemorate the 50th anniversary of freedom, is also located on the property.
La Hougue Bie Museum
A wonderfully memorable, serene, and thought-provoking experience. Contrary to many other dolmens, this one allows you to enter its chamber and experience the aura of this intensely hallowed place.
Jersey Museum, Art Gallery & Victorian House
The Story of Jersey film and Jersey 100 Objects permanent exhibition are both located on the ground level, where you may learn about Jersey’s history for free. There is more to learn at the Museum as you study Jersey’s history from when the first people arrived 250,000 years ago through the centuries (entry fees apply).
